India international goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has shared his thoughts on the mental demands of goalkeeping, the importance of resilience, and his expectations for the FIFA World Cup 2026, offering a unique insight into one of football’s most challenging positions.
Speaking about the pressures associated with being a goalkeeper, Gurpreet explained that the position carries a different level of responsibility compared to outfield players. A single error can often decide the outcome of a match, making mental strength an essential part of the role.

“Being a goalkeeper comes with a different kind of pressure. If you make a mistake, it can cost your team a result, a trophy, or even a nation an important moment. Early in my career, nobody really taught me how to deal with that mental burden. It was something I had to learn through experience,” said Gurpreet.
Gurpreet Praises Emiliano Martinez
The Indian goalkeeper also spoke highly of Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, highlighting resilience and mentality as the key factors behind his remarkable success story.
According to Gurpreet, Martinez spent several years waiting for consistent opportunities before eventually establishing himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers and playing a crucial role in Argentina’s FIFA World Cup triumph.
“What separates Emiliano is his mentality. He went through difficult years without regular opportunities but remained resilient. When his chance came, he made the most of it and played a huge role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph.”
FIFA World Cup 2026 Title Contenders
Looking ahead to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Gurpreet identified defending champions Argentina among the strongest contenders to lift the trophy once again.
He also named France, Spain, Portugal and Germany as major challengers for the title.
While acknowledging the strength of traditional football powerhouses, Gurpreet expressed hope that an Asian nation can make a deep run in the tournament.
“It’s still early to make firm predictions, but Argentina have a great chance of defending their title. France, Spain, Portugal and Germany will also be among the favourites. I am hoping that an Asian team reaches the last eight of this World Cup.”
He added that continued progress by Asian teams would benefit the entire football ecosystem across the continent and help raise the standard of competition on the global stage.
