Mexico began their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey with a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament’s opening match, delighting home supporters with an impressive performance at Mexico City Stadium.
The hosts made a dream start when Julián Quiñones capitalized on a defensive mistake in the ninth minute to score the first goal of FIFA World Cup 2026. Mexico continued to dominate possession and attacking play throughout the first half and came close to extending their lead before the break when an effort struck the post.

South Africa’s task became even more difficult early in the second half after Sphephelo Sithole received a straight red card in the 49th minute. With the numerical advantage, Mexico increased the pressure and eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute.
Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez found the net with a well-taken header from Roberto Alvarado’s cross, effectively putting the result beyond doubt. South Africa finished the match with nine players after Themba Zwane was also sent off in the closing stages.
Mexico captain César Montes received a red card during stoppage time, but it did little to affect the outcome as the hosts secured all three points.
Julián Quiñones was named Player of the Match after delivering an influential performance and scoring the opening goal of the tournament.
